I came across an article which said,”Many parents go to extremes to protect their infant children from germs, but new research shows an overemphasis on cleanliness is responsible for allergies.”

True enough, when I see my kids putting fingers in their mouth, eating without washing their hands, I will certainly disapprove these actions and I will stop them from doing it. What I am worried is they will transfer germs through their “dirty” fingers or hands to their mouths and hence they will get sick. I am sure many parents will agree with me.
I think cleanliness is important so that the children will learn about hygiene since young. Going for “extreme” cleanliness is not a wise idea. In such cases, the children will be lack of exposure and hence their body cannot produce antibodies to fight against the germs should they “encounter” the germs in the future.
I remember a friend of mine who always had diarhoea when she ate in the school canteen. She could not take hawkers’ food at the street side as well as she would have symptoms of food poisoning if she did. She would packed her lunch box to school everyday. When she saw us eating canteen food, she said she wanted to try but she scared of the consequences. Later, we discovered that she was not allowed to eat “outside” food since she was young. I guess that explained for her “fragile” tummy.
Cleaniless in moderation is all what we need. So parents, start thinking what we do to our children. If we want the best for them, we may have to do in moderation, we have to let them build up their own immunity so that they will “fight” for themselves.
